Art Guide

Most of us at one time or another have fallen victim to the jargon trap.  Every subject seems to have its own particular terminology and the world of fine art is no exception.

The comforting thing about art jargon however is that a few definitions are all we need to banish bafflement forever.

Giclées
Giclée printing has transformed the quality of the Limited Edition Fine Art print market forever. Requiring sophisticated printers and specially tested colourfast inks, quality paper and canvas, this blend of fine art and state of the art technology produces extraordinarily accurate reproductions.

Silkscreens
Silkscreens are a modern development of stencil printing, composed by paint being brushed through a number of fine silk screens held taut in a wooden frame - one screen for each colour.

Original Mixed-Media
Original Mixed-Media prints are hand-crafted by the artist using a variety of material and techniques; each piece is therefore unique.

Etchings
Original Etchings are created individually using a traditional etching plate and needle, often hand-coloured by the artist. This method ensures an unusual degree of clarity and strength of colour.

Hand-Embellishment
When the fine art print has been produced it is placed alongside the original; under the direction of the artist certain elements of the image are then highlighted with hand-applied paints, or gold and silver leaf. This is done to bring the piece closer to the essence of the original create a stunning effect.

Hand enhancement
The skilful hand-application of a high quality art varnish brings an added vitality to the finished image.
