Biography

International renowned artist Iain Faulkner was born in Glasgow in 1973, where he was raised and educated. Faulkner was encouraged and guided by his father as child, to become an electrical engineer,. His passion for drawing was both a job and a pastime for his Father.

He graduated from Glasgow School of Art in 1996 with a BA (Honours) Degree in Fine Art, and he since has established himself as a skilled draughtsman. From the onset of his professional career, he as an artist, chose not to follow the fashionable and trendy routes of contemporary and conceptual art,  but to contend with the integrity to embrace the difficult path of figurative painting.

In today's contemporary art world his competence as a figurative artist and  his painterly skill is measured and judged, warts and all. It is his high skills in such areas that have him many admirers and success both from British and American art collectors. He now enjoys an international reputation.

From the onset of his professional art career, Iain Faulkner chose to concentrate purely on figurative painting. His paintings contain strong and powerful images relying purely on visual impact as there is rarely any narrative. His paintings capture calm and contemplative moments, intimate exchanges, solitude, and sometimes melancholy.

Faulkner's paintings typically create a very stark contrast between the light and dark. This seems to bring a stillness in the everyday themes which conveys a sense of inner-reflection. This is then accentuated by the formality of his young self-engrossed characters and emphasised again by the light and shadows reinforcing their emotional detachment from the viewer, but their deep thoughts within themselves.

Faulkner is influenced by artists such as Singer Sargent, Degas, Whistler and especially Vermeer. It is their use of everyday scenes portraying figures completing common-place tasks whilst deep in thought that is then reflected in Faulkner's works.  The scenes in which Faulkner’s character are portrayed take place in various possible worlds, timeless alternate universes where past and present, fact and fiction are intertwined, similar to the artists that have inspired him. Each limited edition piece has endless and open narrative arrived from just one single image, where one can weave and construct their own meaning.

Faulkner is still only in his thirties,  yet he has already had numerous successful solo shows in the UK, USA, Spain and Italy. The result of his endeavors during his relatively short career has brought a considerable measure of success with his last four shows in London and New York selling out which is clearly indicative of the public's appreciation and interest in his work.
